Where Does Pollution Come From?
Much of Southern California's water pollution comes from runoff. Water pollutants can be picked up and carried into our storm drains when it rains, when you wash your car and water your lawn, and from runoff that washes away from farms.Trash, pet wastes, oil, pesticides, and fertilizers are some of the pollutants carried by the water's runoff and washed into our storm drains. This polluted water is eventually streamed into our rivers, creeks, and oceans. Pollution also comes from industrial waste. Factories such as oil refineries and electronic manufacturers release effluents and other untreated sewage into our streams, rivers, and other bodies of water .
How Does Water Pollution Affect Water Shortages?
Water pollution causes our water to become both poisonous and infectious. When water becomes overly contaminated it is no longer available for use. Water pollution is a key reason for why we have water shortages. If we continue to pollute our water we will continue to pollute our water supply.
